Questions and Answers

Canine rodent detection, canine rodent abatement, and rodent mitigation consulting

What is canine rodent detection?

Canine rodent detection is the use of trained working dogs to find where rodents are living on a site. The dogs work by scent, so they locate active burrows, nests, and harborage whether or not anyone can see them. Each indication is confirmed by the handler and documented with photos. More on detection.

What can a dog find that an inspector cannot?

An inspector reads visible evidence such as droppings, rub marks, footprints, and openings. That does not work under dense groundcover, beneath a deck, inside a planter, or across a very large building. A detection dog works by scent and finds burrow systems and nests in those places.

What is canine rodent abatement?

Canine rodent abatement is the use of working terriers to remove rats from the burrow systems and harborage where they live. The dogs locate the burrows, work them under the control of their handler, and take the rats on site. The site is then corrected so rodents cannot re-establish. More on abatement.

Do the dogs replace traps, bait, or my pest control company?

No. The dogs find where the problem is and can bring an active population down. They do not replace a pest management program or the structural work that keeps rodents out. If you already have a pest management company, our findings go to them to act on.

How large a site can the dogs cover?

From a single backyard to large commercial buildings. Our K9 team has worked detection across a 1.6 million square foot facility.

What kind of dogs do you use?

Mia and Hugo are Patterdale Terriers, a small working breed built to go to ground. They are compact enough to work under decks, through dense planting, and along tight foundation lines. Both dogs work detection and abatement. Meet Mia and Hugo.

What does a rodent mitigation consultant do?

A rodent mitigation consultant assesses why a site has rodents and what it will take to stop it. We examine how the building is constructed, where it is open, and how rodents are moving through it, then deliver a written plan with the openings documented, the order of correction, and the materials specified. Do you consult on pest programs for SQF and food manufacturing facilities?

Yes. We develop and review pest programs for SQF and food manufacturing facilities, including monitoring layout, service documentation, trend records, and corrective actions. The consultant is SQF, PCQI, HACCP, and AIB credentialed.

Do you work with other pest management companies?

Yes. Pest management companies bring us in as a specialist resource on accounts that have not resolved. We work at your request, our findings go to you, and we do not solicit the accounts you bring us into.

Do you work for homeowners?

Yes. We work for homeowners, property owners and managers, commercial and food facilities, and pest management companies.

Where do you work?

Across the United States and internationally. Consulting travels anywhere, including offshore facilities.

What do I receive at the end of a job?

A written report with photos: where the dogs indicated, where the burrows and harborage are, how the rodents are getting in, and what to correct first.

How is the work priced and paid for?

All work is quoted in writing before it begins. Consulting is billed by the day at a rate agreed in advance, with travel at cost on projects that require it. Project work requires a 50% deposit at agreement and the balance on completion. We invoice electronically and accept cards and ACH bank transfer.
